Choosing the right garage door company can sometimes be tricky, after all, it’s not a task you do every day. An important thing to remember is that the company that is best suited to you depends on your particular circumstance, it is not going to be the same for everybody.
Garage door companies aren’t all the same, let’s start off by saying that. They don’t all have the same range of services, they don’t all service the same brands, they don’t have the same scheduling systems or the same levels of customer service. Each garage door company will have their own way of doing things and their own levels of expertise, therefore it is important you know what they’re capable before they come out, or you may be paying for nothing.
Here’s an example for you.
You call up a company, you tell them you had a motor installed 3 years ago but a small part of the motor has broken. No big deal, just come out and replace it. When the technicians arrive, they tell you they actually don’t service that particular brand, and that they don’t have parts, so you’re job that originally was going to cost a couple hundred dollars, has now just blown out to a full motor replacement.
Another example is the technician who arrives and tells you that they actually don’t do any repairs (which is more common than you think) and that you should just replace the motor as it’s more than 3 years old anyway. On top of that, he recommends you get a new door as well.
These are actually stories that I hear regularly and could have been easily avoided.
When you call up for a garage door repair company, ask them the following:
- if they service your particular motor and brand of door
- if they have spare parts for your door brand
- if they do repairs or just replacement
- what brands do they use
- what a ballpark price is for one
Simple questions like this can save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
